STUTTGART.- The exhibition "Kollwitz – Beckmann – Dix – Grosz. Wartime" brings together works from within the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart's collection – immediate artistic reactions to the two devastating world wars and society in the first half of the twentieth century. Series and portfolios by these artists rarely shown in their entirety are included, as are self-portraits and other impressive individual works. The drawings and prints are complemented by a small number of paintings and sculptures. For the first time in more than forty years, the Staatsgalerie is presenting its complete internationally noteworthy Käthe Kollwitz holdings, comprising some one hundred drawings and prints. Her oeuvre offers above all investigations – as forceful as they are distressing – of the themes of "war", "death" and "family". The artist's son and gran ... More

New Work by German Artist Florian Maier-Aichen on View at 303 Gallery in New YorkFlorian Maier-Aichen, Untitled, 2011. C-print, 18 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches (47 x 39.4 cm) image, 27 3/4 x 25 inches (70.5 x 63.5 cm) framed.NEW YORK, NY.- 303 Gallery presents their third exhibition of new work by Florian Maier-Aichen. With the works in this exhibition, Maier-Aichen continues his practice of picking apart and expanding notions of photographic representation. Many works in the show rely on a fully hybrid model of image production; utilizing practices of photography, painting and drawing in equal measures has allowed the artist to explore the myth of image-making in pursuit of a new form of the ideal photographic document. "Aus Ven [From Hven] ," an image of the island of Hven in the Öresund sound, filters the explicit tropes of typical landscape imagery (clear skies, fertile fields, blue ocean) through the perspective of hard-edged abstraction. In "La Brea Avenue in the Snow," Maier-Aichen uses historical photography as reference material to create a fairytale scene of a snowy day in Los Angeles. A paean to timelessness, it is also an investigat ... More

Capitain Petzel in Berlin Presents "John Hancock", New Works by Artist Sarah MorrisSarah Morris, Spiral [John Hancock], 2011 (detail). Household gloss paint on canvas, 152.5 cm x 152.5 cm © Sarah Morris, Courtesy Capitain Petzel.BERLIN.- Capitain Petzel Berlin presents "John Hancock", an exhibition of new works by Sarah Morris and her film 'Points on a Line' (2010). The exhibition is on view from April 29 through July 30, 2011. Sarah Morris is one of the most intriguingly contradictory artists of her generation, known for her complex abstractions, which play with architecture, design and the psychology of urban environments. Morris views her paintings as parallel to her films – both trace urban, social and bureaucratic topologies. In both these media, she explores the psychology of the contemporary city and its architecturally encoded politics. Morris assesses what today's urban structures, bureaucracies, cities and nations might conceal and surveys how a particular moment can be inscribed and embedded into its visual surfaces. Often, these non-narrative fictional analyses result in studies of conspiratorial power, ... More

Former President Bill Clinton's Boyhood Home in Hope Opens Doors as Clinton MuseumSpring foliage grows near former President Bill Clinton's childhood home in Hope, Ark. AP Photo/Danny Johnston.

By Chuck Bartels, Associated Press
HOPE, AK (AP).- Bill Clinton's boyhood home in Hope has been open as a museum for more than a decade, but this is the first year that visitors are seeing the home as part of the National Park Service. The home became a national historic site at the start of the year, and Clinton said at its formal dedication in mid-April that he wants the home to stand as a reminder of the values he learned as a child. The home's new designation as a national park site is expected to draw more tourists to Hope, a southwest Arkansas city of about 12,000 with a struggling economy. The two-story, white, wood-frame home was restored to reflect the style of the late 1940s and early 1950s, when the former president lived there. Toys from the period are strewn about one side of the yard and inside is the very couch owned by Clinton's grandparents, Eldridge and Edith Cassidy. Clinton's father, William ... More

The study, prepared by University of Washington professor William B. Beyers, clearly demonstrates that a major arts event can stimulate the economy in multiple ways. The critically acclaimed exhibition was on view October 8, 2010 -January 17, 2011, and ranks as the most highly attended show in the history of SAM Downtown, attracting 405,000 visitors including nearly 20,000 school children and boosting the museum's membership to an all time high of more than 48,000 households. ... Ivorian Artist Paints as Bullets Whizz OverheadABIDJAN (REUTERS).- While fighting raged on the streets outside his studio in Abidjan and stray bullets hissed through the air overhead, Ivorian artist Aboudia painted. Only when the walls of his studio shook from the concussions of nearby explosions did Aboudia, 26, seek shelter in a basement. "I was so afraid while I was painting all these tableaus," he said, casting a glance over a collection of work created during the months of political upheaval in the West African nation since a disputed election last November. "Some work was hard to finish, a lot of the paint is running, dripping. It's not intentional, but it's like fear or sweat, or tears -- like my soul is crying," said Aboudia, whose full name is Abdoulaye Diarrasouba. His work over the past few months provides a haunting interpretation of the uncertainty and violence sweeping the country since incumbent Laurent Gbagbo refused to cede power after losing an election to his rival Alassane ... Time and Money: Using Federal Data to Measure the Value of Performing Arts Activities is a new research note from the National Endowment for the Arts that looks at the value of the arts in three ways: time spent on arts activities; organizational revenue and expenses; and direct consumer spending. A particular focus on performing arts data provides consistency across these three measurements. The note draws on the most recent data available from the U.S. Economic Census, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), to arrive at monetary and non-monetary value measurements of the ... Graffiti Artist's Work Lands Him in Museum and JailNEW YORK (REUTERS).- A graffiti artist whose work went on display this month at a prestigious Los Angeles museum was sentenced to 45 days in prison on Wednesday for practicing the same craft in New York. Angel Ortiz, 44, was arrested three times in March for spray-painting "Laroc" -- his tag -- on walls and buildings in downtown Manhattan. He was sent to the Rikers Island jail on the third occasion, and so missed his chance to attend to the opening this month of "Art in the Streets," an exhibition of graffiti and street art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which includes works by Ortiz. "I went out to walk my dog, I brought a can with me -- I shouldn't have done it, I knew sooner or later I was going to get grabbed," he told a police officer as he was being arrested the third time, spray-paint can in hand, according to a complaint filed in court by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. Ancient Ship Found near RomeROME (AP).- Archaeologists say they have found the upper side of an ancient ship near Rome. The wooden ship was about 11 meters (36 feet) long, making it one of the largest ancient vessels excavated near Ostia Antica, a port city founded some 2,500 years ago and Rome's first colony. Ostia archaeology official Anna Maria Moretti said Thursday the discovery is important above all because it indicates the coastline during ancient Roman days was some 3-4 kilometers (2-2.5 miles) farther inland than it is now. The remains of the ship, missing its bow and stern, were found 4 meters (13 feet) underground during repairs of a bridge linking modern-day Ostia to Fiumicino, the town that hosts Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport. ... "The Civil War and American Art" will be on view at the museum's main building in Washington, D.C., from Nov. 16, 2012, through April 28, 2013. Eleanor Jones Harvey, chief curator, is organizing the exhibition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is the only other venue for the exhibition. A year after Eva's death, we're reposting this to
pay tribute to this inspiring young woman—and help raise
awareness of the disease she lost her life to. Help find a cure
today.

Eva Markvoot, a beautiful, vivacious 25-year-old woman with dyed
ruby-red hair from Vancouver, wrote a popular blog by the name of
65_Red Roses ( http://65redroses.livejournal.com ). Contrary to
what you might think, the blog wasn't about gardening: the
title was her childhood mispronounciation of the disease she
suffered from throughout her life, cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease caused by a gene
mutation, and can cause extreme difficulty breathing, sinus
infections, and many other painful side effects. It affects about
one in every 2,000 people. Although CF can often be managed by
medications and medical treatments, most people who suffer from
the disease live in frequent discomfort, and often die in their
20s or 30s.

BERLIN.- Arndt presents the second solo exhibition with Gilbert & George featuring the new series The Urethra Postcard Art. In 2009, nearly four decades after their first exhibition of POSTCARD ART, and twenty years since their last group of pictures to be made in the medium of postcards, Gilbert & George returned to the form to make the epic and dazzling group of 564 new pieces that comprise The Urethra Postcard Pictures. This is the single largest group of art works made by Gilbert & George, and in turn comprises seven individual groups of new Postcard Pictures. Arndt will exhibit 52 of these works. The art of Gilbert & George has always described, with utmost clarity, poignancy and intensity, the unifying experiences of being alive in the modern world. The artists have addressed those subjects that are seldom considered within the language and focus of contemporary art and culture: that which is lowly, discarded, hidden ... More

Photo: Sotheby's/ ArtDigital Studio.PARIS.- Sotheby's sale of Important European Silver, Gold Boxes & Objects Vertu in Paris on May 17 will include an exceptional silver drinking cup made around 1180, probably in France (estimate euro 300,000–400,000*). No public or private collection holds a piece of such age and with this specific iconography. The cup's decoration is spangled with astral symbols. The eight-branch star, the two circles around the basilisk, and the moon-like shapes evoke scientific works of the early medieval period, and portrayals of the heavens by Western and Oriental astrologists. The planet-like seeds can be interpreted as pomegranate seeds symbolizing fertility. The geometric design, and the creature engraved in the centre of the goblet, are typical of the early Middle Ages. The Basilisk features prominently in 12th/13th century imagery, ... More

NEW YORK, NY (REUTERS).- A locket-size self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and a historical sweep of works by Fernando Botero will be sold next month at Sotheby's auction of Latin American Masterpieces. Sotheby's said "Autorretrato en Miniatura," or self-portrait in miniature, which sold for $225,750 in 2000, could fetch up to $1.2 million. It is Kahlo's smallest work, measuring just 2 inches by 1-5/8 inches, the auction house said. In the oval portrait, she appears youthful and serene and wears chandelier-like earrings that emit a muted sparkle. "This is one of the sexiest Kahlos I've ever seen. She is sending it to her lover, so she is presenting her best face forward," said Sotheby's Latin American head ... More

Photo: Sotheby's.AMSTERDAM.- The highlight of the Old Master Paintings sale at Sotheby's Amsterdam on Tuesday, 10th May, 2011 is A school class with a sleeping schoolmaster by Dutch Golden Age Artist Jan Steen (1626-1979). This painting may be regarded as one of Jan Steen's finest treatments of a schoolroom interior. Furthermore, it is thus far his only known representation of a schoolroom that is both signed and dated and which has remained in private hands. The work has a remarkable provenance, going back as far as 1764, including the distinguished Baring Collection in the 19th Century. This exciting picture, dated 1672, perfectly demonstrates Steen's mastery at depicting the humorous side of everyday life, which remains as true to life and as ... More

Avenue Patrice Lumumba by South African artist Guy Tillim, examines modern history and architecture in Africa, set against the backdrop of its colonial and post-colonial roots. These poignant photographs trace Patrice Lumumba's nationalist legacy across numerous African countries, including Mozambique, Angola and The Democratic Republic of Congo. Patrice Lumumba was one of the first elected African leaders and became the first prime minster of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was assassinated a mere ten weeks after he spoke out against human rights violations, at a time when his country had just earned independence from Belgium in 1960. Today many African cities, streets, avenues and squares are named in his honor, representing ... More

Photo: Courtesy Gasser Grunert.NEW YORK, NY.- Klemens Gasser and Tanja Grunert present their second solo exhibition of Michael Alan. The exhibition is on view from April 28th through June 23rd, 2011. Collapsible Anatomy is a celebration of the universal condition: beauty, delicacy, strength and change. Assembling unusual and unique visual connections, it's an exclamation of life at its strongest and most vulnerable state. This exhibition examines our deceptive frailty by exploring the relationship between emotional states and the physical body: how our feelings are reflected by our forms. The result is presented as an architectural, animated image. The combination of technique creates the illusion of volume and depth – by showing the inner workings, the guts and the worlds within us. Collapsible Anatomy is about the ways in which the corporeal manifests into emotional states and the intangible influences physical reality. Alan's images are ... More

The Charles Riva Collection Presents Exhibition of Selected Works by Paul McCarthyPaul McCarthy, Silver Santa, 2007, Silver - Charles Riva Collection - Photo by Tom Powell, courtesy of the artist and Hauser & Wirth.BRUSSELS.- Charles Riva Collection presents an exhibition of Selected Works by Paul McCarthy from 1993 to 2009, rarely shown in Brussels. Paul McCarthy's (1945) career, spanning over forty years of production, can at once be summarized as chaotic, grotesque, and provocative. His work stems from an adolescence in American popular culture saturated with corn syrup, ketchup, and coca cola, childrens' toys and Disney - materials and references which act as sweetened and cheapened metaphors for the very most basic elements of human life: sweat, blood, sex, desire, feces. McCarthy's world -as represented through his work- is cruel and euphoric but oddly familiar, often taking the form of a skewed allegory or fairytale (Pinocchio or Heidi, for example). His adaptations of these stories methodically predict human excess, spilling proverbial guts and blood to cut ... More

For many people—especially those juggling family
and work obligations—it can be difficult to stick with a
college degree. Kathy Vitzthum thought many times about dropping
out of her accounting program at Iowa State University: She had
two children and a job at Electronic Technology Corp. She'd
only enrolled in the first place because her boss offered her a
promotion and tuition reimbursement if she took a few accounting
courses.

Because she only had enough time to take one class at a time, it
took her seven years to complete the coursework her boss had
asked her to take on. She received the promotion as promised, and
wasn't planning to continue on to a degree. But a request from
her father, who was dying of cancer, made her think twice.

A Magnificent Qianlong Revolving Vase to Be Sold at Christie's Hong Kong Spring SaleA Magnificent Qianlong Revolving Vase. Photo: Christie's Images Ltd 2011.HONG KONG.- Christie's, the world's leading art business, will present a magnificent revolving vase from the Qianlong period (1736-1795) (estimate on request) at its upcoming Hong Kong Spring Sale of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 1 June 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Preserved in perfect condition, the rotating vase has reticulated outer walls and painted interiors, with a complex form and structure that exemplifies the technical brilliance of the craftsmen at the Imperial kilns of the period. The vase, intricately decorated inside with symbols of happiness, longevity, prosperity and joy, is a tour de force of artistic and technical achievement, skillfully combining archaism, novelty and exquisite taste. As few reticulated revolving vases were successfully produced in China at the time, it is not surprising that even fewer surviving specimens are found ... More

AP Photo/Christies.SYDNEY (AP).- An anonymous American donor has given a Pablo Picasso painting worth millions to the University of Sydney on the condition the school use proceeds from the painting's sale to fund scientific research, officials said Wednesday. The 1935 painting, "Jeune fille endormie," depicts Picasso's lover, Marie-Therese Walter, and is expected to fetch up to 18 million Australian dollars ($19.5 million) when it is auctioned at Christie's in London in June, university officials said in a statement. The portrait was donated last year by someone in the United States who requested anonymity, said the university's vice chancellor, Michael Spence. The donor personally flew the painting to Sydney and gave it to the school with the strict orders that it be sold to fund scientific research at the university, Spence said. Italian Researchers Start Search in Florence for Bones of Likely Mona Lisa Model Researchers use a geo-radar device to search underground tombs in a Florence convent. AP Photo/Enzo Russo. FLORENCE.- Italian researchers on Wednesday began looking for the remains of a Renaissance woman many believed posed for the "Mona Lisa." The researchers used a geo-radar device to search for underground tombs in a Florence convent where Lisa Gherardini is believed to be buried. Tradition has long linked Gherardini, the wife of a rich silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo, to Leonardo da Vinci's painting, which is known in Italian as "La Gioconda" and in French as "La Joconde." Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century artist and biographer of Leonardo, wrote that Leonardo painted a portrait of del Giocondo's wife. Gherardini is believed to have died in 1542 and have been buried in the Convent of St. Ursula in central Florence. The researchers will use the geo-radar until Friday, covering an ... More

By: Brett Zongker, Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP).- Museum experts are weighing in on a censorship controversy at the Smithsonian Institution and what it means for publicly funded museums at a time when arts funding has been targeted for deep budget cuts. At a symposium Tuesday night and Wednesday, the Smithsonian hosted many curators who objected to the world's largest museum complex bowing to political pressure last fall and removing a video from the National Portrait Gallery's exhibit "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture." It was the first major exhibit to explore gay themes in art history. About a month after it opened, and shortly after the 2010 election drew Republicans into power in Congress, the exhibit drew complaints from conservative groups over a video that ... More

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP).- Got a camera? The Environmental Protection Agency wants you. The federal agency has embarked on a yearlong campaign to collect photographs from across the United States and around the world for its State of the Environment Photo Project. This time, the scope is global and it's driven by social media. The EPA is calling on the masses to post their best photographs on Flickr. In the first week, about 100 images were posted to a special group page set up through the photo sharing network. The EPA ... More

Valencian Institute for Modern Art Presents Over Sixty Works of Art by Liliane TomaskoVALENCIA.- The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) presents 'Bright Matter' by Liliane Tomasko, on view from April 27 through June 26, 2011. This exhibition gathers over sixty works of art, made between 1999 and 2011, in which the sketchy image of daily details such as paper bags, blankets, clothes, windows and half-lighted rooms acquires shades and textures and, without losing the figurative condition of its photographic origin, evokes certain lyric and geometrical abstraction. To Liliane Tomasko, painting has had a great importance as a unique expressive means of creation, wondering constantly about the limits of abstraction and, consequently, about the limits of figurative art. This is the reason why this exhibition insists on showing an oeuvre in which both pictorial disciplines come together, overlap and continually discuss. On the occasion of the exhibition a catalogue has been published which contains the works displayed ... More

Olivia Bouler was just ten years old at the time of
the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf Coast—but when she
saw photos and videos of the destruction to the wildlife and
natural habitat, she immediately wanted to help. The Islip, New
York fifth grader had relatives around Louisiana, and was
passionate about birds. She was eager to do whatever she could to
raise money for the Audubon Society's efforts to protect and
rescue native wildlife. Last year, she wrote to them with an
idea.

"I am a decent drawer, and I was wondering if I could sell some
bird paintings and give the profits to your organization," she
wrote.
